Pannu has been in Uttarakhand for the past week or so. He was handpicked by Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal for the purpose.

Pannu told HT on the phone that the incident occurred when he was persuading a group of pilgrims to leave the place for Joshimath, 18 km downstream.

"I just told them that they were to be taken to Joshimath, from where they were to be shifted to their hometowns. Suddenly, they attacked me," said Pannu. Reportedly, a contingent of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) had to intervene to save Pannu.
