Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, on Friday, announced that value added tax (VAT) would not be charged on building material used to construct or renovate registered cow shelters, besides pursuing necessary amendments to the Punjab Religious Premises and Land (Eviction and Rent Recovery) Act to bring cow grazing lands out of illegal occupation.

Badal took the decision at a meeting with the delegation of Gau Sewa Mission led by Gau Sewa Board ex-president Bhagat Kimti Lal here, a spokesperson said.

The other decisions included 5% additional tax provision in cattle fair auction to cover up the withdrawal of VAT on the construction material for cow shelters and to develop certain identified cow shelters as breeding centres.
