A week after Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s visit to Haryana, the family of a rape victim told an 11-member Parliamentary committee that they have been receiving threats.
The standing committee on the welfare of SC/ST, led by Gobinda Chandra Naskar of Trinamool Congress, which visited the families of two rape victims in Jind’s Sachakhera and Kaithal district’s Kalayat on Wednesday, said dalits in the state still live in fear.
“The families of rape victims and other members of dalit community told us they were living under constant threat,” said CPI Rajya Sabha member D Raja, who was part of the team. The two Rajput men who had raped the 19-yr-old scheduled tribe victim on October 8, have been arrested.
Mithilesh Kumar, parliamentarian from Samajwadi Party, told reporters Haryana had failed to protect the dalits.
At Sachakhera, the MPs reprimanded officials for not providing compensation to the family of the teenage girl who committed suicide after she was gangraped. The victim’s father, however, met the team later in Kaithal and said they had received RS. 2.5 lakh.
Gandhi had visited the family on October 9.
