I consider myself lucky that I was born in the holy city of Amritsar that was founded by the fourth guru of Sikhs, Sri Guru Ram Das. I visit the Golden Temple daily. I get up much earlier than the sunrise, take a quick bath and a swift walk, to and fro — a distance of 10 kms.
The moment I enter the temple, I feel blessed and the peace that it offers cannot be expressed in mere words as it can only be experienced. “Show me, my family and of course the whole world the right path” are the first few words of my prayer.
It is encouraging to note foreign tourists taking great interest in reading the rich history of the temple from different information sources. The manner in which they take pictures shows their love for the temple and for a different culture and photography.
The hymns recited offer many inspiring lessons but, sadly, very few individuals follow those lessons. There are many who keep themselves fully busy in free services such as cleaning, offering water, making food (lungar) and serving at the kitchen and so on.
Once you enter the main sanctum sanctorum, it takes away all your worries and you feel blessed.
When it comes to receiving ‘parsad’, I turn very enthusiastic since I love its taste. Many a time, like a small child, I would take it twice.
And then you are free to visit the kitchen and have food in the kitchen for free. It serves simple but delicious food and tea to thousands of devotees daily. Here, one gets to understand the term ‘equality’ as devotees from every level of society sit together on the floor to enjoy the ‘lungar’.
Since I go early in the morning, I take only tea; and after every sip, I say “wow” and, of course, I never fail to thank God for His blessings.
And then it is time to return, reluctantly though. While doing so, I wish and pray for a good day for all.
