She left behind no suicide note, but the words "I am sorry" were written on her left hand. Posted at the Dhanas police post, Sonam had joined the Chandigarh police in 2011.

It is learnt that Sonam had reached her room after duty around 9pm on Wednesday. In the morning, her roommate, Rekha, also a UT police constable, left for duty at 7am, when Sonam was sleeping. Sonam was to report for duty at 3pm, but when Rekha returned to the room at 1pm, her knocks on the door went unanswered. Rekha managed to open the door through a window and found Sonam hanging by the ceiling fan.

With the help of neighbours, Rekha got her down and called the cops. Sonam's parents at Mahendergarh were informed, and the body kept at the mortuary for the post-mortem, which would be conducted once her parents arrive. Inquest proceedings were initiated.
