Live heart ‘travels’ from Mysuru to Bengaluru in 2 hours 25 minutes

A live heart was transported from Apollo BGS Hospital in Mysuru to Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital in Bengaluru in just 2 hours after a green corridor was provided yesterday evening.

Giving live updates about the 176 km journey Dr Sudhakar tweeted how a dedicated traffic cop gets on his bike to make way for ambulances in the busy traffic.

Four organs donated by Savitha, a 40-year-old brain dead patient, will now save four lives after successful heart, liver, kidney transplants. Her corneas will give vision to two.

Savitha was admitted on February 18 after suffering a basal ganglia haemorrhage and underwent a craniotomy. However, on Wednesday at 7.30 a.m., she was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure by panellist doctors at Apollo BGS Hospitals. She was healthy prior to the incident, and further tests confirmed her eligibility for organ donation. So her family was counselled in accordance with the protocol, and her husband volunteered to donate her organs.

Officials from Jeeva Sarthakathe, formerly known as ZCCK, started the process, and the organs – heart, kidneys, liver, and corneas – were removed around 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

While the heart was transported to Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bengaluru via a green corridor, Apollo BGS Hospital in Mysuru and Sparsh Hospital in Yeshwanthpur in Bengaluru each received one kidney, while Mysore Eye Bank received the corneas and Apollo BGS Hospital in Mysuru received the liver.

The hospital authorities expressed their gratitude to the deceased patient's family and thanked the Mysuru city traffic police for creating the 'green corridor' from Apollo BGS Hospitals in Mysuru to Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bengaluru.
