ASI losses ₹13.28 lakh in immigration fraud

Police booked two persons for allegedly defrauding a serving police officer of ₹13.28 lakh in lieu of helping send his daughter to Australia on a study visa, the police said.

A case under sections 120-B (punishment for criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 24 of the Immigration act was registered after verifying the details. (Shutter Stock)

The accused have been identified as Karamjit Kaur and Abhi, both residents of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar.

The complainant Mehar Singh who works as an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) for the Punjab Police said that the accused took ₹15.1 lakh from him in exchange of securing a student visa for his daughter to Australia.

As they failed to send her daughter to Australia, the complainant asked for a refund of the money, but the accused only returned ₹1.82 lakh of the total amount.

Giving out further details, Gurmeet Singh, investigating officer, said the complainant had filed a complaint at the Division no 7 police station back in September and a case under sections 120-B (punishment for criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 24 of the Immigration act was registered after verifying the details.
