Ask Amritpal to surrender in any court: Cops to radical leader’s kin

Punjab Police on Wednesday asked the family of ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh to persuade him to surrender in any court.
According to senior officials involved in the operation, a team led by Amritsar (rural) senior superintendent of police (SSP) Satinder Singh along with two deputy superintendents of police (DSPs) visited Amritpal’s family at Jallupur Khera village falling under the Baba Bakala subdivision and persuaded his father and mother to convince their son to surrender before a court anywhere in the country.
During the meeting, which lasted for around an hour, sources said, the family said that Amritpal was not in touch with them ever since he disappeared from the Mehatpur area of Jalandhar district while giving police the slip on March 18.
Senior officials who are part of the operation said Amritpal’s brother Happy is also absconding. Police have got vital leads that he was active in the Shahkot area on March 18, when police teams were chasing Amritpal’s convoy, officials said.
“Happy contacted Amritpal when police teams were chasing the radical leader. He even got in touch with his uncle who is also absconding, using a mobile phone,” officials said, adding that Happy also disappeared from the Shahkot area and his mobile phone is switched off.
Officials involved in the probe said there are strong leads that Happy arranged a motorcycle for Amritpal before he left the gurdwara after changing clothes.
When contacted, DSP Harkrishan Singh, who was part of the team that visited the pro-Khalistan leader’s house, said they wanted to discuss some important aspects with his family.
It is learnt that the teams also quizzed Amritpal’s wife Kiran Deep Kaur. The family, however, didn’t speak to the media.
Officials said the bank accounts Amritpal and his family members are also being examined.
Right-wing activist arrested
The Amritsar (rural) police arrested a right-wing activist, Soni Ajnala, for spreading hate using social media. Soni has been booked for trying to disturb the peace and harmony in the state.
Soni had been vocal against Amritpal and Khalistani sympathisers on his social media accounts. On Saturday, he posted a video on his Facebook page labelling Amritpal as a Pakistani agent.
