Behbal Kalan police firing: Kejriwal must fulfil promise of justice, says victim’s son
Two Sikh protesters — Gurjeet Singh of Sarawan village and Krishan Bhagwan Singh of Niamiwala village in Faridkot district — were killed on October 14, 2015, when they were protesting against the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib.
Two days after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the Punjab assembly elections, the son of one of the victims of Behbal Kalan police firing incident asked the party’s national convener and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to fulfil his promise of justice.
Two Sikh protesters — Gurjeet Singh of Sarawan village and Krishan Bhagwan Singh of Niamiwala village in Faridkot district — were killed on October 14, 2015, when they were protesting against the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib.
Krishan Bhagwan’s son Sukhraj Singh has been sitting on indefinite dharna at the incident site for the past 76 days. “After the incident, Kejriwal had visited our house and promised that justice if AAP comes to power in the state. Now is the time to fulfil that promise.”
“Two chief ministers, Captain Amarinder Singh and Charanjit Singh Channi, had also assured us of justice but nothing was done. Former IG Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, who had investigated this case, should now ensure proper legal follow up in courts as he knows all the details,” said Sukhraj.
In 2021, when the AAP was in the Opposition, it had asked the Congress government to set a deadline in the sacrilege and Behbal Kalan firing cases. However, trials are still pending in these cases. The special investigation team (SIT) looking into the Kotkapura case is yet to file a fresh chargesheet. The previous chargesheet filed by the team, when it was led by Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, had been quashed by the Punjab and Haryana high court. Kunwar Vijay had taken premature retirement and joined AAP after the chargesheet was quashed.
Mann must take action against people responsible for it: Khaira
Congress’ Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, who visited Behbal Kalan on Saturday, said AAP’s chief minister-designate Bhagwant Mann must take action against those responsible in these cases.
Khaira, who met Sukhraj, said “AAP’s newly-elected MLA, Kunwar Vijay, who investigated the police firing incident as a police officer, must ensure the guilty are punished,” he said.
“Kunwar Vijay should also expose the police officers responsible for ordering fire on peacefully protesters,” said Khaira.
Congress must apologise to people: Sandhwan
“Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and their entire leadership, including Khaira, must apologise to the people for not providing justice in these cases. They have only use the issue for electoral gains,” said AAP Kotkapura MLA Kultar Singh Sandhwan.
