Chandigarh principal among 46 teachers chosen for national award
Seema Rani, the principal of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Dhanas, Chandigarh, is the first educationist from the city to be selected for the award since 2017
Seema Rani, the principal of Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Dhanas, has been chosen for the National Awards to Teachers 2022 that will be conferred by President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on Teachers’ Day (September 5).
Rani is among the 46 awardees selected this year by the ministry of education following a rigorous and transparent three-stage selection process that was conducted online. Each award will carry a certificate, a ₹50,000 cash prize and a silver medal.
UT director school education (DSE) Harsuhinder Pal Singh Brar called it a proud moment for Rani and the education department, as she was first Chandigarh teacher to be selected for the award since 2017.
Brar said Rani’s efforts over the years had made her a deserving candidate for the award. In her representation, the increase in enrolment and pass percentage of the school has been highlighted.
Other initiatives of the school include a glorious gaiety room, “bachpan ki gali”, honesty shop, water conservation and hand wash station, community fridge, science and maths park, and kitchen and spice garden. The school’s efforts during the Covid pandemic were also highlighted.
Talking about what drives her, Rani said, “It is my purpose to make the children I teach upstanding citizens. While education is important, I try to involve them in extracurricular activities as well for their overall development.”
The school is located in the city’s periphery and its students comprise mostly children from underprivileged households and first-generation learners. While the results of periphery schools are usually lower as compared to schools situated in the inner sectors of the city, GMSSS-Dhanas has been producing impressive results.
