Ludhiana jailbreak: Police increase vigil outside jail, observation home

Following the request, police have increased security outside the jail complex and observation home at Shimlapuri

After two incidents of jailbreak at Ludhiana Central Jail and juvenile home, the authorities have asked the police to increase vigil outside the compound walls. According to officials, the move will also deter the smuggling of contraband to the jail.

Following the request, police have increased security outside the jail complex and observation home at Shimlapuri. Patrolling teams have been asked to keep a check on the activities outside the juvenile home and jail complex and police control room’s motorcycle squads have also been deputed.

An official of the observation home said that 12 home guard personnel have been deputed to the observation home. Additional police force has also been deployed outside the observation home.

The official added that after the jailbreak by two inmates, the police personnel deputed outside the observation home at the time have been transferred. The observation home officials have asked police commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu to increase the security.

Similarly, central jail officials have asked for patrolling alongside the compound walls. As per jail officials, patrolling outside jail will also help in deterring smuggling of mobile phones and other contraband as the aides of inmates used to throw contraband over the compound walls.

On May 5, an undertrial had outsmarted the central jail officials and escaped through an under-construction watchtower of the prison. The inmate had returned from Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Nawanshahr, court after hearing of a case.

On May 6, two inmates lodged at observation had managed to escape by scaling a compound wall. Two inmates, aged 16 and 19, had scaled the wall using wires and blankets.

Checks held at court complex

Police, along with para military forces, conducted a special checking at the district court complex on Thursday.

The team, led by assistant commissioner of police, civil lines, Jasroop Kaur Bath conducted checks on all floors of the complex and at the parking area.
