Ludhiana: Couple arrested for looting ₹99K from man who offered lift

The arrested couple, Bhupinder Singh and his wife Manpreet Kaur of Satkartar Nagar on Tibba Road, Ludhiana, were addicted to drugs and would steal cash and phones to fund their habit, cops said.

A couple was arrested for stealing 99, 000 from a man, from whom they took a lift, on Thursday. Eight stolen mobile phones and 12,000 was recovered from them.

The accused, Bhupinder Singh and his wife Manpreet Kaur of Satkartar Nagar on Tibba Road, were addicted to drugs and would steal cash and phones to fund their habit, cops said.

The complainant, Kamaljit Singh of Kapurthala, told the police that he was on his way to New Delhi when the couple sought a lift from him near Samrala Chowk. After they had driven some distance, the accused brandished a sharp-edged weapon. They stole robbed him of 20,000 cash on knifepoint and also made him transfer 79,000 to an account.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP, City 4) Tushar Gupta said, “We traced the account to which the money was transferred, and found that it belonged to a shopkeeper. Kaur took cash from the shopkeeper against the money deposited by the complainant. The accused were identified with the help of CCTV (closed-circuit television) footage.” 

A case under Section 379B (snatching after preparation made for causing death) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against the accused at Division 7 police station.
