To deal with solid waste management, municipal corporation (MC) commissioner Shena Aggarwal has decided to conduct a competition among all the four zones of MC to improve waste management in the city.

Ludhiana MC has been facing flak over improper solid waste management in the city and the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) had also imposed penalties (environmental compensation) of ₹4-crore on the civic body in the past. (HT FILE)

Components such as conditions of open secondary dumps, waste segregation etc will be included in the competition, which will be announced in the coming days.

Aggarwal said the competition would be based on percentage-wise improvement in solid waste management.

“For example, there is a difference in the conditions in Zone-D and Zone-A areas. While compactors have not yet been installed in the latter, which is the Old City area, these have been installed in many areas of the former zone. The competition will be based on percentage-wise improvement in every zone. Similarly, waste segregation will be monitored in every zone,” Aggarwal said.

The MC has been facing flak over improper solid waste management in the city and the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) had also imposed penalties (environmental compensation) of 4-crore on the civic body in the past. The residents have also been disquiet about dumping of garbage in open. Over 1,100 metric tonnes of garbage is generated in the city on a daily basis. The garbage collected from houses is dumped at secondary dumping points which is then shifted to the main dump site on Tajpur road.

The authorities had also decided to hold such a competition in the city a few years back, but no concrete steps were taken for the same .
