Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader died in a hit-and-run incident in Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, one of the post localities of the city.

The deceased, who has been identified as Gurinderpal Singh, 61, a resident of Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, was the senior district vice-president of SAD.

According to the information, a speeding car had hit the deceased’s scooter on Monday morning. He was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries during treatment.

After the mishap the Sarabha Nagar police lodged a first information report (FIR) against the unidentified car driver who managed to flee from the spot of the accident.

Gaganpreet Singh, the victim’s son, said his father was returning home after paying obeisance at a local gurdwara on Monday morning when a speeding Toyota Innova car hit his scooter in the I-block of Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar.

The victim managed to reach home himself, but later collapsed. The family rushed him to a hospital, where he died.

Sharing further information, sub-inspector Amarinder Singh, station house officer (SHO) at Sarabha Nagar police station, said the police are scanning closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed in the area to identify the accused.
