Steadfast police work helped crack open the case, with officials saying that the complainant, identified as Ajay Kumar, 42, had himself staged the firing with the intention to implicate his wife and cousin in a false case.

In addition to Kumar, police arrested three aides Jatinder Singh of Ramteerath road, Putlighar, Amritsar, Deepak Kashyap and Sonu Kumar both residents of New Puneet Nagar, Tajpur road. Police have also recovered a .32 bore pistol and impounded a motorcycle and a car found in their possession. A fourth aide, Ashish Yadav, meanwhile, is still at large.

Giving out details, commissioner of police Mandeep Singh Sidhu said Kumar, a resident Ramteerath road of Putlighar, Amritsar, suspected that his wife Balwinder Kaur was having an affair with his cousin Raveen Mehmi. Looking to implicate her, Kimar had accused Kaur and her brother Manveen and Raveen of hiring contract killers after the staged attack at his shop.

Police had initially registered an attempt-to-murder case against Kaur after on Kumar’s complaint, but were still looking to verify his claims as the complainant had changed his statements on multiple ocassions.

During questioning, Kumar eventually confessed to the crime and following information provided by him, police managed to arrest three of his four aides.

Elaborating on the crime, the police chief said, “Ajay hatched a conspiracy of staging an attack on him and involved Jatinder Singh in it and Deepak Kashyap, Sonu Kumar and Ashish Yadav for the task. They procured a pistol from an Amritsar-based supplier. Deepak, Sonu and Ashish Yadav came to his shop on a bike and opened fire on the walls.”

Kumar approached the police after the attack, accusing his wife of the same.

Inspector Bikramjit Singh, station house officer (SHO) at the Jamalpur police station, said a hunt is on for the arrest of the remaining accused. Police are also working to trace the person who supplied the pistol.

On December 10, Kumar had informed police that three masked miscreants opened fire after barging into his shop. The assailants, as per complaint, had fired two shots at him, but the bullets missed and hit the walls. The businessman had accused his wife and cousin of hiring the goons, adding that they wanted to kill him after he uncovered their affair.
