Multi-layered security arrangements in place across Kashmir ahead of I-Day celebrations

Multi-layered security arrangements have been being put in place across Kashmir ahead of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15.
The security agencies have heightened the security measures across the valley, including enhanced deployments, frisking and frequent checking of vehicles, particularly around the I-day function venues, including in capital Srinagar.
The police and other security agencies have established mobile checkpoints, increased deployments in sensitive areas while the security grid of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway has also been enhanced.
The main function is scheduled to be held at Bakshi Stadium, Srinagar, where chief minister Omar Abdullah is expected to unfurl the national flag, while smaller events will be held in all the district headquarters.
Kashmir inspector general of police (IGP), VK Birdi said that all the security and parade arrangements are being put in place to have smooth I-day celebrations. “Multi-layered security arrangements are being made in Srinagar and across Kashmir. Not only the venues ( for I-day function) but also around the city, multi-tier arrangements are being put in place,” he said.
“Rehearsals and full dress rehearsals are being organised to have a smooth event on August 15 in Srinagar,” he said.
The security agencies are taking extra precautions after two back to back terror attacks in south Kashmir in July. Two migrant labourers from Chhattisgarh were killed following a terror attack in Kulgam district on July 31. The attack followed closely on the heels of another incident, 10 days prior, in which terrorists allegedly shot and killed a police officer deployed on Amarnath Yatra security duty in Anantnag.
The IGP held a security review meeting at police control room, Kashmir, on Monday to assess the overall security scenario and review arrangements for the forthcoming celebrations and other events scheduled to be held across all districts of Kashmir Valley.
“During the meeting, IGP Kashmir reviewed the security arrangements for the various events planned across the valley, including rallies and assigned specific responsibilities, to concerned officers. Birdi also reviewed the security arrangements for the main function scheduled to be held at Bakshi Stadium, Srinagar, and directed the officers concerned to further strengthen security measures and ensure comprehensive security arrangements for the event,” a police spokesperson said.
Tiranga rallies held across Kashmir
The Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign 2026 picked up major momentum across Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday as deputy commissioners and SSPs led mega Tiranga rallies, bike rallies and bicycle rallies in Kupwara, Budgam and Shopian districts, drawing massive participation from students, youth, ex-servicemen and citizens.
The week-long nationwide campaign, being observed from August 9 to 17, aims to instil patriotic fervour and encourage every household to hoist the National Flag, reaffirming commitment to the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
In border district Kupwara, a grand Tiranga Rally was organised at Teetwal village. Kupwara DC Shrikant Suse, and SSP Tahir Gilani, flagged off the rally from HS Gundi Sharti.
In Budgam, DC Athar Aamir Khan along with SSP Hariprasad KK flagged off two major bike and bicycle rallies from Budgam sports stadium.
