2 junk dealers fined ₹24,310 for stocking dry waste in Chandigarh

The municipal corporation on Sunday slapped a penalty of ₹24,310 on two junk dealers near Shahpur Colony in Sector 38 West for stocking large amounts of dry waste.

In a joint drive with the Chandigarh Pollution Control Board and police force, MC, using JCB machines, tippers and trolleys, moved the dry waste to the Dadumajra waste plant for scientific processing.

Municipal commissioner Anindita Mitra, who was present at the spot, said stocking large amounts of dry waste was a violation of the Municipal Solid Waste Rules 2016 and Municipal Solid Waste Bylaws 2018. She said the waste came from a noted hotel chain, which, instead of following statutory provisions of waste disposal of waste, was dumping it with unauthorised junk dealers.

By doing so, they were not only flouting the waste management rules but also creating insanitary conditions that may affect health of locals, she said.

The commissioner warned all violators to remove their illegally stocked waste from their premises, failing which legal action will be initiated by MC. She also directed the officers concerned to erect warning signboards against the violation.
