Nakodar trader’s killer: Gangster Purewal booked for extorting ₹ 25 lakh from businessman

Unearthing extortion racket, Jalandhar police have arrested seven members of his gang for running illegal business of threatening local merchants and extorting money from them.
On December 7, 2022, five persons shot dead cloth merchant Bhupinder Singh alias Timmy Chawla, while his PSO constable Mandeep Singh, who also received bullet injuries, succumbed to the injuries later at Capitol Hospital in Jalandhar. However, in fresh cases, of total seven accused, four were involved in double murder case and were already behind the bar. Accused have been identified as Gurwinder Singh, Gagan Gill, Amrik Singh, Hardeep Singh and Akashdeep Singh, who were brought on production warrant from Kapurthala prison.
Other accused were identified as Sarovar Singh of village Chotian in Muktsar district, Swaran Singh of Moga and Tarsem Singh Sethi of Nakodar.
Senior superintendent of police Swarandeep Singh said after double murder case, police continue to receive multiple complaints regarding extortion calls from Amandeep Purewal and his gang members.
“A five-member special investigation team was constituted. During investigation, it came to fore that Amandeep made extortion calls to local merchants from US-based numbers and made extortion attempts on his name and Harvinder Singh Rinda, Pakistan based terrorist,” the SSP said.
He added that Amandeep contacted Amrik’s cousin Sarovar Singh, an engineering graduate, and made him operate his gang along with his friend Swaran Singh, who is yet to be arrested.
“The accused demanded ₹ 40 lakh from Nakodar-based businessman and the deal was set at ₹ 25 lakh. Accused Swaran accompanied by an unidentified woman collected the amount and handed to another accused Tarsem Singh, from whom the amount has been recovered,” police said.
Two FIRs dated March 14 and 22 have been registered against Amandeep and his gang members under sections Sections 386 (extortion), 387 (Putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion), 148 (rioting) and 149 (unlawful assembly), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
