Two assailants opened fire at a widowed woman after scaling the compound wall and barging into her house in Dhilwan village of Samrala on Monday night.

The complainant, Sukhdev Kaur, who escaped unhurt, said, “On Monday night, I was sleeping in the veranda when two men barged into the house and opened fire at me. They fled after I raised the alarm.”
Later, the woman checked the CCTV cameras and identified one of the assailants as her nephew. She also found that an aide of the two assailants had been keeping watch outside the house.
The accused, Manpreet Singh alias Mani, is a resident of Jalanpur village. Sub-Inspector Joginder Singh, who is investigating the case, said, “Manpreet Singh had married his cousin, the complainant’s daughter against their families’ wishes. Later, his wife left him and went abroad, for which he blamed Sukhdev Kaur.”
A case was registered under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 452 (house-trespass), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, and sections of the Arms Act against Manpreet Singh and his two aides, who are yet to be identified.
In 2021, Manpreet Singh had lodged an FIR against Sukhdev Kaur for hiring miscreants to assault him.
