Panchkula logs 45 lumpy skin disease deaths in 22 days

As many as 45 cows have died of lumpy skin disease (LSD) in Panchkula in the past 22 days ago.

The first death was reported on August 10 and 13 more cows died of the disease over the next 10 days. Fatalities increased in the last six days, which saw 32 deaths.

As per data shared by the animal husbandry and dairying department, 3,433 cattle have been infected by LSD so far. Of these, 296 infections have been reported from 12 cow shelters and the rest from 165 villages or wards.

Except four cases, wherein buffaloes have got the infection, the disease is dominant in cows. The recovery rate is slow as only 851 cows have been cured till date.

Anil Banwala, deputy director of animal husbandry and dairying department, said farmers have been advised to isolate the sick animals and approach a veterinarian if they notice any symptoms, including lumps, high fever, and excessive secretion from mouth and nasal cavity. Transport of cattle has been banned till further orders.

Banwala added that while the disease does not spread from animal to humans, farmers have been advised to take all necessary precautions while handling diseased animals such as wearing gloves and a mask.

He said the milk and milk products produced will be fit for human consumption after boiling or pasteurisation as it kills the virus, if any are present.
