Punjab: Dhuri residents protest after admn allows burial on govt land

Tensions flared in the Jagatpura locality of Dhuri after the administration allowed the burial of a Christian priest on government land in the area, sparking protests from local residents.

The administration’s move came after members of the Christian community held a protest on the Sangrur bypass on Wednesday, seeking a dedicated burial ground.

However, Jagatpura residents expressed concern that the priest’s burial could set a precedent for a permanent burial site in the area. While maintaining that the deceased should be treated with dignity, they demand an alternative burial spot away from the residential area.

Dhuri DSP Gurpreet Singh stated that the priest passed away in Delhi and his body was brought to Dhuri on Wednesday. He said a meeting had been scheduled at the municipal council executive officer’s office on Friday for a solution.
