Start-up policy: Adviser for bringing all incubation centres in Chandigarh under one umbrella

UT adviser Dharam Pal has recommended the formation of an umbrella organisation for all incubation centres in the city’s, under the start-up policy, which is set to be rolled out next month.

The industry department presented the draft policy before the UT adviser on Monday.

The adviser, while recommending the bringing of all incubation centres, under one umbrella, said this would help entrepreneurs avail of facilities under a common system. He also recommended that funds be routed through government departments to support start-ups.

UT industries secretary Hargunjit Kaur said, “We will incorporate the recommendations within a week and roll out the policy early next month.”

The UT began drafting the policy in 2018, two years after Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi unveiled the Start-Up India Policy and directed UTs and states to frame their own policies tailored to the needs of entrepreneurs in their regions. However, due to several flip-flops, the UT missed multiple deadlines for enforcing the policy.

Naveen Manglani, vice-president of the Chamber of Chandigarh Industries, said, “The industry department should not delay the policy rollout anymore. It should be launched as soon as possible.”

The city has 335 recognised start-ups, as was stated by Union minister of state, commerce and industry, Som Parkash, in the Lok Sabha this August, but it has been lagging in implementing a dedicated policy for five years.
