For the uninitiated, a causeway is a road built along a water-body on a higher surface than the area around to ease crossing the wetland.

The first path will be constructed at Shahpur village at a cost of 2.25 crore is expected to ease travel for residents of Shahpur, Machhonda and other adjoining villages, while the second road worth 2.08 crore will connect Kardhan to Ekta Vihar benefiting areas like Prabhu Prempuram, Soniya Colony on Kardhan side as well as BD floor mill area, Nishant Bagh, Decent Colony on the other.

The paths will be 7 metres wide each along, with 500-metre-long approach roads connecting with the flyway. They are expected to ease traffic on other roads or highways providing alternative routes to commuters.

Officials at the irrigation department said the approvals of both the projects were sanctioned in the last two weeks and work will commence soon after the tender is floated.

Home minister and local Member of Legislative Assembly Anil Vij said the causeways will benefit residents on the other ends of both the routes, especially farmers who have their agricultural fields on the other side of the river.

“Such farmers had to earlier cross the river through unpaved paths or use the national highway to reach their fields. This becomes difficult when the water level increases after monsoon rains. Construction of an under-bridge on the Ambala-Delhi rail line near Shahpur village is also underway that will reduce accidents on NH-44 and waiting time at the fatak,” Vij said in a statement.
