AIIMS, ISRO sign MoU to research space medicine

AIIMS, New Delhi partners with ISRO to advance space medicine research, focusing on astronaut health challenges during missions and supporting human spaceflight.

New Delhi: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi has partnered with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to advance research in space medicine, a field that studies how space travel affects the human body.

The collaboration will include both ground and space based studies to better understand the health challenges astronauts face during missions.

Scientists and doctors will examine how conditions such as microgravity, radiation exposure, and long-duration space travel impact human physiology. The research aims to develop medical strategies and technologies that can help astronauts remain healthy during such missions.

It also aims to support India’s growing human space flight ambitions by combining space science expertise from ISRO with clinical and biomedical research capabilities at AIIMS.

Prof M Srinivas, AIIMS, New Delhi director said, “This MoU will give us the escape velocity to venture together into the field of space medicine. Collaborative research will benefit patients, the nation and ultimately humankind.”
