Under its eco-restoration plan (2026-2030), the Delhi government on Tuesday launched a three-year plantation programme with the aim of restoring around 6,303 hectares of Ridge forests by planting more than 10 million native saplings.
The plan is based on Delhi’s first working plan prepared by the Forest Research Institute and approved by the Union environment ministry in November 2025. Officials said the programme will cover all Ridge ecosystems and focus on restoring degraded forest areas by replacing invasive species such as vilayati keekar, subabul and eucalyptus with indigenous trees, shrubs, climbers and bamboo.
According to the plantation schedule, 2,856,000 saplings will be planted across 1,490 hectares during 2026-27, including 1,427,000 trees and 1,429,000 shrubs, climbers and bamboo. In 2027-28, the government plans to plant across 1,670 hectares, with 2,585,000 saplings, including 705,000 trees and 1,879,000 shrubs, climbers, and bamboo. During 2028-29, another 2,443,000 saplings, comprising 709,000 trees and 1,734,000 shrubs, climbers and bamboo, will be planted over 1,450.55 hectares.
Over the four-year implementation period, the plan envisages the plantation of 3,551,000 trees and 6,497,000 shrubs, climbers and bamboo, taking the total number of native plants to more than 1,000,000.

{{/usCountry}}“The eco-restoration plan provides a scientific roadmap for restoration and sustainable management of Delhi’s Ridge ecosystems. Native species plantation, removal of invasive vegetation and habitat restoration will be undertaken in phases to strengthen biodiversity and ecological resilience,” an official said.
Officials said the plantation programme will be complemented by Mission Green Delhi under the Green Action Plan 2026-27, which targets more than 7,000,000 plantations across the capital through government agencies and public participation.
