The National Green Tribunal (NGT)’s principal bench has impleaded the station house officer of Mayapuri police station in a matter regarding illegal scrapping activities and the resultant pollution risks in Mayapuri.

The order, passed last Friday, as part of an application registered on the basis of a 2025 news report on Mayapuri’s scrap market, says the market was functioning again after being shut down by the NGT in 2018.
During Friday’s hearing, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said they had removed the encroachments from the area, but pipe-cutting activities were still taking place on mornings.
“In view of the continuing activities, the MCD requested that the concerned police be made a party to the proceedings to ensure effective monitoring and enforcement. Accepting the request, the tribunal directed that the SHO, Mayapuri police station, be impleaded as respondent No. 8 in the matter,” said the NGT in a statement.
The next hearing for the case is on September 15 this year. The Tribunal will review responses from the authorities involved, and the steps taken to address encroachment and the environmental concerns in the area.
