KOLKATA: A 23-year-old who was in a relationship with a married woman, 28, in West Bengal died by suicide on Thursday after her family caught him in the house and locked him up in a room, prompting his neighbours to demand action against the woman’s family.

The mob also threw stones at police personnel who tried to retrieve his body for an autopsy, leading to injuries to four policemen including deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Abhishek Gupta. The incident took place on Thursday morning at an area under the Pandaveswar police station under the Asansol-Durgapur police commissionerate. A dozen people have been picked up for questioning in connection with the violence, a Pandaveswar police officer said.
According to preliminary investigations by the police, the 23-year-old man, who worked as a caretaker at a resort, had an affair with the woman who lived in the same locality. The man had gone to meet her on Thursday morning when her family members caught him and locked him in a room. Police said it appears that he died by suicide in the room.
As the news spread, local residents surrounded the house and demanded action against the woman’s family.
They tried to stop the police from taking the body for an autopsy and a heated argument broke out, which soon escalated into a free-for-all.
Police said the situation was finally brought under control and the body retrieved. More than a dozen local residents were rounded up for questioning in connection with the clash. “We are also probing the case related to the youth’s death,” the officer added.
