Shah, who traded in shares, according to the neighbours, had a chest injury that appeared to have been caused by gunshot while his wife was reportedly stabbed.

Police said one of the couple’s three daughters lived with them and had left for work in the morning.

Another daughter who also lives in the Bhawanipore area told the police that she tried calling her parents several times during the day but they did not pick up their phone. She came over to check on them in the evening and found the bodies.

The couple could have been killed in the afternoon, said a police officer who visited the spot.

A steel safe in the couple’s bedroom was found ransacked, leading the police to suspect that robbery may be the motive. The detective department of the Kolkata Police has started an investigation.

Police commissioner Vineet Goyal and Kolkata mayor and minister Firhad Hakim rushed to the spot.

The locality is part of chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s constituency.

“I heard that one of the victims had a gun injury but only post mortem can ascertain the cause of death. Nobody can escape after committing a crime like this. Police will nab the culprits,” said the mayor.

A police officer later said they were going through the footage of security cameras installed in the neighbourhood and were in the process of identifying some suspects.
