Ajay Thakur, Barrackpore’s joint police commissioner, identified the suspect as Amit Pandit. “The investigation is going on.”
Anupam Dutta, the TMC councillor from Panihati and Tapan Kundu, Congress councillor from Jhalda in Purulia, were shot dead on Sunday evening in two separate incidents days after they won the local polls on February 27.
“We have questioned a few persons in connection with the murder of Kundu. No one has been arrested so far,” said a police officer in Purulia.
Dutta was riding pillion on a two-wheeler when he was shot point-blank, CCTV footage shared by the police showed. The assailant was seen wearing a blue and white striped t-shirt.
Later in the night, residents found the man hiding in some bushes in a marshy area. They surrounded the area and then set the bushes on fire to get him out. Once the man came out, he was handed over to the police. Police have also recovered a firearm and a blue t-shirt.
Congress has called a 12-hour bandh in Purulia to protest against Kundu’s killing on Tuesday. Jhalda Municipality is hung with the Congress and TMC winning five seats each. Independent candidates won two seats.
