In separate incidents, unidentified assailants shot at dean, veterinary, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut, prof Rajbeer Singh in Meerut and the jailor and two other staffs of the Deoband jail in Saharanpur district on Friday night, police said.
Prof Singh, who hails from Heva village of Meerut district, was on his way back from the university late on Friday evening when two motorcycle-borne unidentified criminals overtook his car and forced him to stop. Both the assailants, who were wearing helmet to conceal their identity, opened fire at prof Singh and fled.
Meerut senior superintendent of police (SSP) Prabhakar Choudhary said prof Singh received three bullet injuries and four empty shells of cartridges were found on the spot. The university students and teachers rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident and admitted seriously injured Singh in a private hospital.
SSP said the condition of prof Singh is critical. “ Police teams have been formed to investigate the incident and identify the assailants”, he said and added that they had got no clues about the assailants so far. “Prof Singh was unable to speak and family members also have not shared any information about the suspects,” SSP said, adding that the assailants will be identified and arrested soon.
In another incident, unidentified criminals opened fire at the jailor and two other staffers of the Deoband jail on Friday night when jailor Reevan Singh was strolling inside his official residence premises along with two other jail staff after dinner. However, they hid themselves behind a tree and none suffered injuries in the incident.
Station house officer (SHO), Deoband police station, Prabhakar Saud said five people, including two main assailants, had been arrested in connection with the crime. He said some visitors came to meet one criminal Neetu, lodged in the jail, on Thursday but the jail staff denied them permission which led to an altercation between them. Two of them opened fire on Friday night to terrorise the jail staffs, police said.
