LDA prepares demolition of 50 illegal Lko buildings
The move follows the June 22 fire at an illegal commercial complex in Aliganj’s Sector D that killed 15 people and injured nine
The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has drawn up a list of around 50 properties across the state capital for enforcement action, with demolition proceedings likely to begin from September. These buildings allegedly violate sanctioned maps and land-use norms.
The move follows the June 22 fire at an illegal commercial complex in Aliganj’s Sector D that killed 15 people and injured nine. The tragedy has pushed the LDA to accelerate action against buildings where commercial activities are allegedly being carried out in violation of approved maps, including properties built on land meant for residential use.
According to senior LDA officials, the new list includes both commercial and residential properties. Several shortlisted buildings were either constructed in violation of the sanctioned plan or are being used for commercial purposes without approval. Some properties are still under construction despite alleged violations.
Officials said the Authority had issued notices and warnings to several of these property owners multiple times, but violations continued.
LDA officials said enforcement teams have begun assessing the properties, including their current occupancy and the machinery and manpower required for sealing or demolition.
51 Aliganj buildings under court watch
Separately, the Supreme Court has ordered a detailed survey of 51 commercial buildings identified as illegal in the Aliganj area.
The Supreme Court-appointed team, comprising the amicus curiae and two senior professors from IIT Delhi, is expected to visit Lucknow on August 24. The team will inspect the identified buildings with LDA officials and submit its findings to the court within three weeks.
The court had sought a status report from the LDA on action against unauthorised constructions and questioned the Authority over enforcement failures following the Aliganj fire.
Ahead of the court-monitored survey, the LDA has requisitioned files related to pending cases from the Prescribed Authority Court.
