Mayan Mahotsav in Lucknow: A rural-urban confluence with a message

Mayan Mahotsav 2023 - an initiative to integrate rural and urban cultural landscapes turned out to be a memorable event in Lucknow on Sunday.

‘Mayan’ means mother in Rajasthani. Organised by former DG CRPF, Dr AP Maheshwari, in memory of his mother, the one-day event, this time was based on Kabir, the saint, who propagated the renunciation of worldly desires and advocated a simple lifestyle.

The event began with village children performing yoga, under the guidance of Shalu Bijani, a yoga instructor, who tutored the kids in Kamla Kutir premises under the aegis of ‘Mayan Sanskriti Village Youth Club’.

Nutritionist Tanya Sahney conducted an interactive session with rural representatives, Madhurani and Awadh Bihari on the adverse food trends that have lately caught up with the villagers.

A vocalist of the Gwalior Gharana, Neelima Sharma enthralled the audience with her melodious renditions from Kabir while poetic session on ‘Basant’ was presented by Vinita Mishra, an Awadhi dialect expert and famous poet, Manish Shukla.

Theatre director and playwright Gopal Sinha helped the village kids put together a skit on aspirations of the youth. It was written and enacted by the village children at Maheshwari’s scenic farm house. A play was put together by Childline Youth team members under Sangeeta Sharma’s guidance while Shashwita, a seasoned story teller and well-known OTT artist, who has acted in many TV serials, put together a solo performance based on Rajender Singh Bedi’s ‘Chechak Ke Daag’. Scintillating folk songs, based on Kabir’s verses followed. A poetic session conducted by Jyoti Sinha and Amit Harsh happened next. ‘Mayan Sanskriti Club’ students under Vinod Shakuntala’s guidance presented ‘Rangoli-led positives in life’.
