Over 4,100 youths reach Varanasi for Agniveer recruitment
The recruitment under Agnipath Scheme began on November 16 at Ranbankure Stadium. The recruitment rally is meant to cover the applicants hailing from around 12 districts of east UP.
VARANASI: More than 4,100 youths thronged Ranbankure Stadium here to take part in the ongoing recruitment rally under Agnipath Recruitment Scheme on Tuesday, the defence public relation officer (PRO) said.
The footfall was against the total 7420 registrations, he said. “On Tuesday around 4100 youths participated in the recruitment rally,” said Shantanu Tripathi, PRO Defence.
Youths from different parts of east UP dropped in hours before the rally. “I am keeping my fingers crossed. I have been training for the past two years. I am sure this year I will sail through,” said Manoj Kushwaha, a resident of Ballia.
There were many other aspirants from neighbouring districts of Varanasi . Agnipath scheme was introduced on June 14 this year for recruitment of soldiers below the rank of commissioned officers into the armed forces. Under the scheme, recruitment would be only for four years. The scheme bypasses many important benefits, including long tenure, pension and others which were there in the old recruitment system.
Barring a few who expressed their views against the recently launched Agniveer Scheme, a majority of youths said that serving the nation was above all. “I think the serving nation is above all. I am here to serve the nation and money is secondary for me,” another youth said.
However, youths said that the government should at least extend the serving period under this scheme which would be of great benefit to the youths. “The four-year tenure was too short. It should be minimum 10 years,” a youth said.

The recruitment rally is meant to cover the applicants hailing from around 12 districts of east UP that include Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Deoria, Chandauli, Azamgarh, Jaunpur, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Mirzapur and Sonbhadra. The rally would conclude on December 6. In total, around 1,43,286 registrations have been made in the region for the recruitment rally.
