Now a ‘Shaheed Wall’ in the heart of Civil Lines would tell tales of bravery and sufferings endured by our freedom fighters. The Prayagraj Smart City Ltd is busy constructing this 108-metre long memorial at a cost of around ₹3.5 crore near Civil Lines bus depot that would tell the story of many known and lesser-known freedom fighters, said officials in the know of things.
“This wall will have pictures or portraits of freedom fighters besides depictions related to the freedom struggle. To ensure that historically correct information is provided on the wall, a three-member committee of historians too has been formed,” said SK Sinha, mission manager (technical), Prayagraj Smart City Ltd.
The wall, which will tell the stories of around 40 unsung freedom fighters too, will be ready well before the start of Mahakumbh-2025, he added.
Prayagraj has played an important role in the freedom movement of the country. Idols and statues across the city stand testimony to the freedom fighters who laid down their lives in the struggle to gain independence.
The most prominent being the Chandra Shekhar Azad Park, where Chandrashekhar Azad made the supreme sacrifice fighting the British police as well as Malaka Jail, a witness to the sacrifice of freedom fighter Roshan Singh. However, there are also many freedom fighters who either remain anonymous or lesser known and this wall will be tribute to all, said officials.
Meanwhile, at a time when countless trees get chopped for the sake of development and new constructions, efforts of the Prayagraj Smart City Ltd officials are drawing praise for their move to make minor changes in the design of the proposed Memorial Wall—all to ensure not chopping a branch of a mango tree located near the site.
The officials have provided a hole in the wall coming up near Aayakar Bhawan and Hindu Girls’ Inter College to allow the branch of the tree to continue to exist and thrive but also not hinder the construction of the wall.
Site contractor Kamal Narayan Singh, who is getting the Shaheed Wall constructed, said the importance of the tree will be written on a panel below the branch. Along with this, an attractive look will be given by decorating the branch as per the plan, he added.
