TTE held for outraging woman’s modesty on train, co-accused on the run
Action taken against the accused when the victim filed a complaint at the Government Railway Police (GRP) station in Sambhal on Saturday
LUCKNOW A travelling ticket examiner (TTE) was suspended from service and arrested for allegedly gang-raping a 32-year-old woman along with his accomplice in the first AC coach of the moving Dehradun-Prayagraj Link Express in UP’s Sambhal district on January 16 night, said police.
The incident came to fore after the woman reached home and confided in her husband. Action was taken against TTE Raju Singh, 40, when the victim filed a complaint at the Government Railway Police (GRP) station in Sambhal on Saturday. “The TTE was produced before the railway magistrate and sent to custody. However, the other accused was on the run,” they said.
“Raju Singh was suspended. However, the other accused has not yet been apprehended because neither the victim nor Singh have any knowledge of the other person,” said Sudhir Singh, divisional commercial manager (DCM), Moradabad division.
The victim had boarded the train at Chandausi station and reached her destination, Prayagraj, on January 17 morning. The incident happened when she, along with her two-year-old son, was waiting to board the train at the railway station. As the woman was known to the accused, Singh allegedly urged her to travel in the AC coach, saying it will be challenging for her to sit in the general coach with her son, officials said.
According to the FIR, the woman was offered food around 9.30pm by the TTE and the other person, but she declined. She then received water from the TTE, which she drank. “As the water was laced with sedatives, I fell unconscious. The TTE and his accomplice outraged my modesty on the moving train and also shifted my son (who was sleeping) to a different berth. I tried to scream, but lost my voice of sedation,” alleged the woman.
On January 17, the woman arrived at her destination but chose not to inform anyone of what had happened. She told her husband about the incident when she got home on January 20. They then reported it to the railway helpline, and on Saturday, a FIR was filed against the TTE and his accomplice at the railway police station.
