Railway carries 12-year-old accident victim to hospital, in nick of time

Mumbai: With his left leg crushed after he fell off a running train near Bandra station, all that 12-year-old Farhan Kamru Ansari asked police constable, Ketan Kalyansingh Tatu, who found the boy bleeding near the tracks, was will he survive. Spurred by the question, Tatu picked the boy up and ran on the tracks, managing to reach a hospital in the nick of time. The boy lost his leg, but he survived.

It took Tatu 10 minutes to first reach Bandra Station and then Bhabha Hospital, in Bandra West. Doctors at the hospital said that Farhan would have died if he were not rushed to the hospital, as he had lost a lot of blood. They added that the boy’s left leg, however, had to be amputated.

A constable attached to the Bandra Government Railway Police (GRP), Tatu said the incident took place at around 12.22 pm on Sunday, while he was patrolling at Bandra railway station. He saw somebody lying on the side of the tracks.

Suspecting the victim to be a trespasser, 30-year-old Tatu rushed to the accident spot. “As I reached there, I saw a boy in a pool of blood with his left leg broken from below his knee,” said Tatu. He called up the GRP control and informed them about the accident.

“I then picked up the boy who was in a semi-conscious state and asked him his name,” the constable said. “The only thing that the boy asked was, will he live? That is when I knew, I had to save him at any cost.”

Tatu picked up the boy in his arms and ran on the tracks towards Bandra station. “Within 10 minutes I got the boy admitted to the Bhabha Hospital in Bandra west,” Tatu said.

Senior police inspector of Bandra GRP, Hamraj Kumbhar said that the boy was travelling from Matunga to Bandra standing on the footboard in an overcrowded compartment, when he slipped and fell off the running train.

“We have to record the statement of the boy only after which we will know the exact sequence of events,” said Kumbhar.

Farhan’s elder brother had informed their parents about the accident. Ansari’s father who works with a fashion designer in Santacruz rushed to the hospital.

“We stay in Dharavi; I did not know where Farhan went and whether he was accompanied by someone. I am just glad that his life has been saved,” said Kamru Ansari.
