Two children injured as tempo crashes head-on school bus in Panvel

Two school children were injured when a speeding tempo collided with their bus on the Pune-Mumbai Highway; a case has been filed against the tempo driver.

MUMBAI: Two school children were injured after a tempo, allegedly being driven rashly, collided head-on with a school bus on the Pune–Mumbai Highway in Panvel on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the police, the accident occurred at 2.05 pm near Parpund village, in front of a hotel in Panvel, when the tempo rammed into a school bus carrying 17 students from primary and secondary classes. An eight-year-old girl sustained serious injuries, while a 16-year-old boy suffered minor injuries. Both children reside in a housing society near Palaspe Phata.

“The girl sustained a fracture and was taken for treatment by her parents. The boy suffered minor injuries,” the investigating officer said.

Bus driver Sandip Mohite, 52, who lodged the complaint, told the police that the tempo driver was speeding and ignored road conditions, leading to the crash. Police said the tempo was allegedly being driven on the wrong side of the road at the time of the accident. The bus was also damaged in the impact.

Based on the complaint, a case has been registered against the tempo driver, identified as 43-year-old Milind Sankpal, under Sections 281 (rash driving), 125(A and B) (endangering life), and 324(2) (mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
