A 30-year-old undertrial inmate of Luksar jail in Gautam Budh Nagar district died after he was taken to a hospital following health complications on Monday evening. He was arrested by personnel from the Phase 2 police station on Sunday in a theft case.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Vikas (known by his first name only), a native of Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh.
“We received information about his health complications at Ecotech 1 police station around 7pm on Monday from the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) through a memo that a prisoner at Luksar jail was admitted at the hospital in an unconscious state around 4:35pm,” an official statement from Gautam Budh Nagar Police said.
Vikas was declared dead by the hospital authorities at around 5.20pm, said police.
Luksar jail superintendent Arun Pratap Singh informed that Vikas was arrested in a theft case registered against him in 2006 at Phase 2 police station.
“A warrant was issued against him recently and he was arrested on Sunday and sent to jail by the concerned police station. He did not complain of any health issues on Sunday. However, on Monday evening at 4pm, he suddenly complained of acute chest pain. After he fell unconscious, he was rushed to the hospital by the jail authorities,” Singh added.
Singh said that this was the fourth time that Vikas had been arrested and sent to jail.
“Vikas was a drug addict and was held in a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act case in 2018. The body has been sent for post-mortem and the exact cause of death would be known after the autopsy reports. His family members have been and further legal proceedings in the case are being carried out by our personnel,” Singh added.
Officials from GIMS refused to comment on the matter.
