Gorakhpur rly station to be remodelled in 2.5 years: NER GM
To be built with an expenditure of over ₹600 cr, the new station will be a blend of heritage and latest tech
The proposed model of Gorakhpur railway station is a combination of legacy and latest facilities and technologies.
The Railway Board has given green signal to the proposed model and an expenditure of around ₹618 crore has been estimated for the remodelling project.
Talking to the media persons at the NE Railway conference hall on Friday, NER general manager Chandra Veer Raman said both the heritage and landmarks of Gorakhpur would reflect in the architectural design of the new world class railway station.
He said the construction works would start soon and in two-and-a- half years, it would be completed. He said the proposed model had been designed keeping in view the need arising in the upcoming 50 years.
Elaborating on the facilities in the new model, he said emphasis has been laid on crowd management. Currently, daily 93,000 passengers depart and board the train from Gorakhpur railway station, and in this backdrop a concourse spread over 6,300 square metres with a capacity of accommodation of 3,500 people at a time has been proposed.
In addition to this, there would be a roof covering 31,000 square metres of the area with 44 lifts and 21 escalators. There would be one entry and one exit gate that would make it easy to manage the crowd from security point of view.
Chief public relations officer Pankaj Kumar Singh said that there would be a roof plaza, food outlets, waiting hall, ATM and kids play area also. Responding to a question he said a hotel, shopping complex and hospital facilities would be available inside the building of the railway station.
Singh said parking facilities of four-wheelers and two-wheelers would be enhanced. The revamped railway station would become the city’s centre as it would come up in the middle after expansion of the city in all directions.
