Two technicians die, one injured after gas leak at Schaeffler India plant in Talegaon MIDC

Two fire safety technicians died and another was injured after a carbon dioxide (CO₂) leak at the Schaeffler India plant in Talegaon MIDC on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
The work was carried out by Usha Fire Services staff identified as Gaurishankar Sharma, Vaibhav Thorat and Pramod Jaiswar, along with Schaeffler India employees Krishna Sahu and Sushobhan Pakhira. (REPRESENTATIVE PIC)
According to Talegaon MIDC police, the incident occurred around 12.30 pm at the company’s facility in MIDC Phase-I while maintenance of the plant’s fire extinguishing cylinders was underway.
The work was carried out by Usha Fire Services staff identified as Gaurishankar Sharma, Vaibhav Thorat and Pramod Jaiswar, along with Schaeffler India employees Krishna Sahu and Sushobhan Pakhira.
Santosh Patil, senior inspector, Talegaon MIDC Police Station, said, “The safety pin of the extinguisher cylinders was accidentally removed, resulting in a CO₂ leak. The victims are suspected to have inhaled the gas, which may have led to the fatal incident.”
Police said three workers affected by the gas exposure were rushed to Pavana Hospital. Doctors declared Thorat and Sharma dead on arrival, while Jaiswar is undergoing treatment. His condition is reported to be stable.
The police have registered an accidental death case and launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of leak and whether safety protocols were followed.
