UP Board to soon offer NCC course to its students
National Cadet Corps (NCC) could soon become a part of the syllabus in schools affiliated to the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UP Board), said officials
National Cadet Corps (NCC) could soon become a part of the syllabus in schools affiliated to the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UP Board), said officials of the state education department.

Once implemented, over 1.25 crore students of Class 9 to Class 12 enrolled in over 28,000 schools affiliated to the board will get an opportunity to join it and be part of this students’ programme, added the officials.
The board has begun efforts in this direction following specific instructions from the Yogi Adityanath led state government.
“A meeting of the syllabus committee to deliberate on the syllabus of this proposed NCC course was convened in Prayagraj on Thursday. Though it is yet to be decided whether to introduce this course as optional or make it mandatory for the kids, the ground work has begun,” said UP Board secretary Neena Srivastava.
She said the report received from the subject experts would be sent to the state government for approval and it would be introduced as soon as the formal go ahead is received.
Presently, a few schools affiliated to the board do opt for a NCC unit directly from the NCC headquarters for their students as well as of those of nearby schools while the students of other schools who opt for Military Science just have to remain content with cursory learning about NCC from a chapter.
The students of class 9 and class 10 join junior division while those of class 11 and class 12 join the senior division. The Class 9 and Class 10 students after two years of training and assessment receive ‘A’ certificate while the students of Class 11 and Class 12 after two years of training and assessment bag ‘B’ certificate and they can then train for a year at the undergraduate level and have an opportunity to bag the coveted ‘C’ certificate. Those directly joining NCC at graduation level can also bag ‘C’ certificate, but after three years of training and assessment.
The limited reach of the NCC at present among UP Board students can be gauged from the fact that at the intermediate level, the available Military Science subject witnessed mere 4,628 students registering for it and just 3,715 passing in it, said an official.
To finalise the course content, UP Board officials have also contacted their counterparts in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the board could introduce NCC just like sports and physical education for the students which are mandatory for Class 10 to Class 12 students and for which the students are evaluated through an internal assessment. However, the marks are not included in the marksheet issued by the board, claimed an official.
