Ashes 1st Test Day 2 Highlights: Usman Khawaja's ton, Carey's fifty take Australia to 311/5 at stumps, trail by 82 runs

A solid 91-run partnership between Alex Carey and Usman Khawaja for the sixth wicket take Australia to 311/5 at stumps on Day 2. They now trail by 82 runs. Khawaja is batting on 126, while Carey has accumulated 52.

Alex Carey and Usman Khawaja stitch another big partnership as Australia breach the 300-run mark. Carey, on the other hand, completes his half-century. AUS: 309/5

Stuart Broad knocks Usman Khawaja's stumps but the celebrations are cut short as umpire signals it a no ball. Khawaja gets another chance on 112. AUS: 266/5

Moeen Ali bowls an absolute jaffa and the ball passes through the gap between Cameron Green's bat and pads and knocks the stumps. He falls for 38 as Australia lose half their side with 220 on the board.

The final session is underway and it is crucial for both the sides. Australia will look to reach as close to England's first innings total as possible, while England will look to fightback after a tough afternoon session. AUS: 194/4

After a disappointing opening session, Australia enjoy a good session, during which they accumulate 110 runs for the loss of one wicket. 

Usman Khawaja, who is batting on 84, along with Camveron Green (21) take Australia to 188/4 at tea. They are trailing by 205 runs.

Jonny Bairstow gave Cameron Green an early relief and now he has added a 23-run stand with Usman Khawaja, who is inching towards his ton. Khawaja is batting on 77. AUS: 171/4

After Khawaja, Travis Head too completes his half-century. Takes just 60 balls to reach the milestone. However, he departs in the very next over by Moeen Ali as Zak Crawley grabs a stunning catch at short mid-wicket. With this the 81-run stand for the fourth wicket too comes to an end. AUS: 148/4

The second session is underway and the focus is on Travis Head and Usman Khawaja to build a partnership and give Australia the edge. So far it has been England, who have dictated the proceedings. AUS: 86/3

The first session has come to a close and it has been the hosts, who have so far ruled the proceedings. 

Resuming from the overnight total of 14/0, Australia move to 78 for the loss of three wickets. Stuart Broad has scalped two, while Ben Stokes picked one. 

Usman Khawaja, who is batting on 40, will resume the second session with Travis Head, who has just faced 11 deliveries so far. The Aussies still trail by 315 runs.

England skipper Ben Stokes gets the big wicket of Steve Smith, who is trapped LBW for 16. The umpire raised his finger but Smith takes a review, but TV replay confirms the ball was clipping the stumps. 

Smith is not very happy with the decision as he takes the long walk back to the pavilion. AUS: 67/3

Smith and Khawaja rebuild after the early blows as Australia cross 50. 

Meanwhile, England skipper has introduced spin in the game as Moeen Ali bowls from one end, while pacer Ollie Robinson bowls from the other. AUS: 59/2

Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith do some rebuilding as England are currently bossing the proceedings. The pair take Australia to 41/2 as England look to inflict some more blows.

Two in two for Stuart Broad, who first removes David Warner and then packs Marnus Labuschagne in the very next ball. 

Warner is cleaned up for 9, while Labuschagne is caught-behind for a golden duck. AUS: 29/2

England's smash-grab and rockstar approach to Test cricket seems to have an effect well beyond the sport. This is England's men's football coach Gareth Southgate talking about it: “I've had a couple of meetings with Rob Key (England's managing director of cricket). I'm a big cricket fan and I think it's hugely exciting to watch. Their mindset has been a big thing but they've also got a lot of world class players, they've got a lot of players who would get a world XI. There's definitely been this shift in how they're playing and I imagine it's the first first-team in my lifetime to declare on 393 for eight on day one. That'll be an interesting decision because in the end people will judge that on the outcome, as they do the decisions we make as a coach. But that's a clue as to the mindset they're going into the series with.

"It's hard to align it [to football] because they have a lot more games and time together. Whenever we've done cross-sport things, you're always mindful of, 'OK what are the bits we can pick off, what are the bits that might be unique to the different sport', and in the end you're looking at things that can help you to win. There, the alignment between the captain and coach is really strong, the alignment with the head of cricket is really strong which in any sports organisation is really crucial and this summer is going to tell us a hell of a lot."

Smith has always been fiery vs England and has 11 Ashes centuries in his kitty, third-most by any batter in the series. Two more centuries will take him to second position, behind Don Bradman's 19 Ashes centuries. Jack Hobbs is above Smith with 12 Ashes tons.

Against England at Edgbaston, Warner registered 97 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 94.17 and 24.25 average, with a highscore of 77.

After Day 1, Bairstow said, "Overall it's been a good day. The intent the guys showed, Zak's first shot of the day in stark contrast to last time. The crowd's been on good form and we really enjoyed it. (First ball) I don't think that's a changed over the last 12 months. If the ball's there to be hit, you hit it. The lads are out there with a smile on their faces, from the start of the day to the end, when Robbo slipped over."

"There's different pressures, when you're going in on the back of wins and with people in form, you have trust in each other. People doing their jobs and then you come together as a unit. That's what the last 12 months have been about. [Root stand] Five down you're thinking a couple here and we could be in trouble. Been lucky enough to bat with Rooty for too long, and we've had some special times in the middle.

"We just had a bit of craic out there. Great fun being back out there, just got my hands and feet going again. Going to take a bit of time after my long lay off, but when you're in you give it your best shot. (Bowling) Be patient and relentless on a length. They are going to hit the middle of the bat (sometimes) but we need to create pressure. We'll turn up in the morning and they'll have to start again. It's a bold call (to declare), it's a good call," he further added.

Healy is the joint second-highest wicketkeeper with most dismissals in an innings at Edgbaston. He is level at 5 with Sarfaraz Ahmed (PAK vs ENG, 2016), Bairstow (ENG vs IND, 2018). Healy (AUS vs ENG, 1997), and Read (ENG vs NZ, 1999) lead the pack.

In 62 innings, Root has registered 3299 runs, at an average of 58.91, with a highscore of 228. He has also bagged nine fifties and 13 tons. Meanwhile, no other batter has scored over 2000 runs or hit more than seven tons in this period.
