Govt takes over, seals Lalit Modi’s Jaipur havelis

The Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) sealed and took back possession of two havelis in the Amer Fort area on the city’s outskirts on Wednesday from former Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi and his wife, Minal Modi.

The two properties spread over 467 and 1,463 sq yards were sold in 2007 for R9 lakh and

R21 lakh, respectively, while the market price was estimated at more than R100 crore.

“We sealed and took possession of the havelis following instructions of the urban development department today,” said MP Swami, CEO of JMC.

HT had first reported on the illegal deal (Sinister haveli sale in Rajasthan, Feb 14, 2008) exposing how government-owned heritage properties were sold for a song to private parties. The HT report said some individuals, close to then Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje, had allegedly “captured” havelis in the vicinity of the Amer fort.

The present government has been considering steps to reclaim these properties.

Modi had claimed in 2008 his company “bought these havelis, which were private properties in dilapidated condition”. He said the deal was legal.
