India, Sri Lanka A tie ends in draw

Two declarations from either side had set up the game for a great finish, but the drab draw disappointed, writes R Mahajan.

Two declarations from either side had set up the game for a pulsating finish, but the draw between the Indians and Sri Lanka A could not have been more drab.

The equation was simple --- after the Lankans blasted to 265 before declaring just after lunch, the Indians needed 294 in 57 overs.

The chase was never really on --- despite being exhorted by fans masquerading as travelling minstrels, raising an almighty din with drums, songs and cheers, a draw was the best the Indians could hope for. After the early exit of Dinesh Karthik, Wasim Jaffer and Yuvraj Singh did add 56 for the second wicket in good time. But once No. 3 Yuvraj fell, with the team needing 238 in 41 overs, India needed someone to really push the scoring if they wanted to force a positive result.

MS Dhoni was the man for the job, but not this Sunday. The expected barrage of runs never really materialised. Dhoni fell for one, trapped in front by Dammika Prasad, and India were 73 for three.

Jaffer, having missed a 50 in the first innings, got one on Sunday before left-arm spinner Rangana Herath struck twice in the space of six runs. He caught Jaffer off his own bowling for 55 and then got VVS Laxman lbw.

Rahul Dravid joined Gautam Gambhir at that point and the two played sedately, almost ensuring there would be only one result in this game, before Dravid became the fourth lbw victim in the innings.
