16:46 hrs IST: That is all from us here. It has been a fantastic Test series. The action between India vs England will resume on January 15 with three ODIs and three Twenty20 Internationals. Wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Virat Kohli registered his 14th win as Test captain and continued his unbeaten run in Tests at home. (BCCI)

16:34 hrs IST: The trophy is presented to the Indian cricket team and they are joyous scenes all over. Wonderful moment this. Happy times for Indian cricket and it has been a very happy 2016 for them.

16:30 hrs IST: Virat Kohli, with his quotes in the post-match presentation. “Jadeja did the job in both the innings. Hit right areas and made it uncomfortable for the batsmen. Very proud. Toss and pitches were out of the equation. We were batting behind by 400 runs and then won by an innings. We work hard everyday and believe in us. What matters is what each one of us thinks about the other. And it’s evident on the field. Nobody is playing for himself. Everytime we were put under the pump, we have tightened up on giving away wickets at crucial time, after intervals. The lower order has deflated the opposition and their hard work in the nets showed.”

16:26 hrs IST: In the post match presentation, a gutted England skipper Alastair Cook offers no excuses. “We weren’t good enough to bat out. It was about missed opportunities. We dropped crucial chances and India kept punishing us. We have’t been better than the opposition. Our catch drops have cost us. We just haven’t scored enough runs and not taken wickets.”

16:19 hrs IST: England’s journey of collapses. Began from Mirpur in Bangladesh when they lost all 10 wickets in one session, has culminated with them losing all six wickets in the final session in Chennai. Collapso England is the new trend.

India players celebrate as they completed a 4-0 series thrashing against England. (BCCI)

16:15 hrs IST: Speaking after the match, Ravindra Jadeja says, “I am very happy that there was no such help from the wicket but we still did well. Me and Ashwin were bowling in right areas. It was a good experience bowling on a flat wicket and I picked up a fifer.”

16:11 hrs IST: England have lost a Test for the first time after crossing 450. Ever since 1877, they had not lost a Test after posting over 450.

16:06 hrs IST: Virat Kohli is yet to lose a Test match at home as skipper. This is his fifth straight series win as skipper. What a time he is having out in the middle. Simply remarkable.

16:03 hrs IST: Murali Vijay, the local Chennai lad, is having a light moment with the groundsmen. He is congratulating them and also enjoying with them.

15:55 hrs IST: WICKET! Jadeja ends the match in style. Ends with 7/48, his best figures as he cleans up Stuart Broad and Jake Ball. India have won by an innings and 75 runs to clinch the series 4-0. Special effort from Jadeja and India have won. Sweet revenge for the hurt of 2011, 2012 and 2014.

15:49 hrs IST: England are known to hang in there till the last moment. Remember Cardiff 2009 against Australia? Or Cape Town and Centurion against South Africa in 2009/10? Matt Rrior’s epic rearguard against New Zealand in Auckland 2013 also comes into mind.

15:46 hrs IST: Umesh bowls four bouncers in the over, none of them dangerous enough to have Buttler playing. England are hanging in. Virat Kohli might be tempted to get Jadeja or Ishant back at the other end.

15:43 hrs IST: The physio is out there treating Stuart Broad for the blow which he suffered to his thigh in the last ball of Umesh Yadav’s over.

15:41 hrs IST: England are resorting to time-wasting tactics. It is not new for them. They did it in Cardiff 2009. Virat Kohli is not happy and he is standing next to the umpire.

Umesh Yadav picked up the wicket of Adil Rashid as India closed in. (BCCI)

15:36 hrs IST: Three slips in place for Umesh Yadav. India looking to break this stand as soon as possible.

15:34 hrs IST: Drinks and we are into the final hour of this series. India need two wickets, England have to survive 13 overs or more. Looking at the way how spinners are running through their overs, they will be facing a lot more.

15:31 hrs IST: Appeal for an LBW but not given. Broad padded up to the carrom ball as he chooses to leave it, Kohli opts for the review but replays show that the impact was outside off. India lose a review.

15:28 hrs IST: Ashwin to share the new ball. He is getting big turn and bounce. India can sense it.

India took four quick wickets after the tea session to put themselves on the cusp of a 4-0 series win. (BCCI)

15:23 hrs IST: WICKET! The second new ball was taken and Umesh Yadav strikes. Full ball on middle and leg and it straightens, Rashid looks to work it to mid wicket, gets a leading edge that is taken by Jadeja at point.

Adil Rashid c Ravindra Jadeja b Umesh Yadav 2, England 200/8.

15:21 hrs IST: 80 overs are done. Reviews will be back to two for each team. Only 15 overs left in the day and one hour to go. Can India do it?

15:19 hrs IST: Edged but safe! Ashwin bowls a sharp off-break and Rashid inside edges it onto the pad, it falls just in front of Kohli at slip. Closing in!

15:17 hrs IST: Mishra and Jadeja are running through their overs very quickly. 16 over remain in the day. But, we are going to get a lot more if England bat through. Can the tail continue to hang in?

15:13 hrs IST: India can sense a 4-0 win. Moeen’s shot in the circumstances was horrendous and this is the main factor behind England’s collapse.

Amit Mishra joined the celebration as he cleaned up Liam Dawson with a googly to leave India on the cusp of a win. (BCCI)

15:07 hrs IST: WICKET! Brilliant from Mishra. India are closing in on a 4-0 win. Brilliant stuff. Liam Dawson is cleaned up by the googly and England are 196/7

15:00 hrs IST: Jadeja (5/46) strikes again. Stokes (23 off 54 balls) has now given his wicket away. Stokes fails to close the face of the bat, gets a leading edge into the hands of Nair at short mid-wicket. England 193/6. India sniffing a win?

Ravindra Jadeja picked up his first five-wicket haul against England and sixth overall. (BCCI)

14:48 hrs IST: England must bat with prudence at this stage. Stokes is on 23 and he can’t afford to play a loose stroke like Moeen Ali. England’s temperament has been a problem.

14:46 hrs IST: England get lucky again. Jadeja could have got his fifth wicket had Jos Buttler’s edge did not elude the diving fielder at short leg. England 192/5 in the 74th over and trail by 89 runs.

14:53 hrs IST: Moeen Ali is out 44 (97 balls). It’s Jadeja again and England slip to 192/5. It was a bad stroke. Moeen heaved to mid-wicket and Ashwin takes a great catch and wins Virat Kohli’s applause.

14:52 hrs IST: England control the pace of the game. Moeen and Stokes are picking on the bad balls to keep the scoreboard ticking. England 192/4. Moeen 44, Stokes 22.

Ravindra Jadeja got the wickets of Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes as India ran through the lower order. (BCCI)

14:47 hrs IST: Moeen Ali survives a chance. Jadeja bowls right up and Moeen gets an inside edge that falls just wide of the short-leg fielder. It wasn’t an impossible catch but luck England’s way. England 191/4 after 70 overs. Moeen 43.

14:45 hrs IST: England 186/4, trail by 96 runs. Moeen Ali 42, Stokes 22.

14:42 hrs IST: Ben Stokes (18) and Moeen Ali have put on a 50-plus stand. England 181/4.

14:38 hrs IST: Ravindra Jadeja from the other end. Moeen Ali , 41, looks quite comfortable. England 177/4.

14:33 hrs IST: Amit Mishra starts after tea. India bank on spin to win six wickets in the last session of the series. England 174/4.

14:30 hrs IST: The final session of this series is upon us. Can India take the remaining wickets?

14:25 hrs IST: Ravindra Jadeja and opposition captains! What a relationship. He has made them all his bunny. Read this anecdote here.

14:10 hrs IST: That is Tea and England are 167/4, still trailing by 115 runs. However, the session single-handedly belonged to Jadeja and his exploits have given India a real chance for a 4-0 series win. Will India take the remaining six wickets?

14:06 hrs IST: Ouch! Rahul has been hit hard on the arm at short leg. Moeen sweeps Mishra but he hits Rahul flush on the forearm. He is in pain but is alright.

14:01 hrs IST: Moeen and Stokes would get confidence from a couple of boundaries but there is still a task ahead of them. They trail by 125 runs and heading into the final session, there is everything to play for.

13:58 hrs IST: Edged but safe! Stokes edges Umesh Yadav but it goes past the vacant second slip region for a boundary. Tension!

Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets and one outstanding catch as India dominated the post-lunch session against England in Chennai. (BCCI)

13:49 hrs IST: Stokes is surviving some anxious moments against Ashwin. He gets an inside edge and it just misses the stumps.

13:43 hrs IST: In the air but safe! Umesh bangs in the bouncer, it rears up on Moeen as he tries to take his eyes away from the ball, but he does not complete the shot and the top-edge lands safely at fine leg, India definitely planning on the bouncer barrage against Moeen.

13:34 hrs IST: Moeen Ali needs to play a very calm innings here. If England are six down at the Tea break, surviving the next session will be next to impossible.

Ravindra Jadeja took a brilliant catch to dismiss Jonny Bairstow as England were left reeling at 129/4. (BCCI)

13:25 hrs IST: WICKET! WHAT A CATCH! The catch of the series and India are now on course to take this 4-0. Ravindra Jadeja, what a playaa!!!

Full ball from Ishant Sharma, Bairstow flicks it to deep mid wicket but he has not timed it well, Jadeja runs back from mid wicket and puts in the hard strides, he reaches out and takes a two-handed screamer. ‘Sir’ Jadeja is turning it on. This catch reminds me of the Kapil Dev one in the 1983 World Cup final between India vs West Indies when he ran back and took the catch of Sir Vivian Richards. Madan Lal was the bowler.

Jonny Bairstow c Ravindra Jadeja b Ishant Sharma 1, India 129/4

13:22 hrs IST: Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler are the last remaining batsmen for England. Even the tail can contribute but in this pressure, they might be blown away.

13:17 hrs IST: Ishant Sharma is keeping it tight at the other end. With the runs drying up, it becomes easier for Jadeja to just chip away and take wickets at the other end.

13:09 hrs IST: WICKET! Jadeja on a roll! DRS helps India. Flatter delivery on middle and leg stump, it spins away as Root attempts the slog sweep, he misses it and India appeal, the umpire gives it not out and India review, replays show it pitched in line and was hitting leg stump.

Joe Root lbw Ravindra Jadeja 6, England 126/3.

13:05 hrs IST: Third umpire being called for a run-out. Jadeja got his hands to it but Root’s bat is safely in at the non-striker’s end.

Ravindra Jadeja got the vital wickets of Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings in the post-lunch session. (BCCI)

13:00 hrs IST: Root and Moeen are calmly steadying the ship. England do have depth but if they hold their nerve, then they can survive. Otherwise, they can collapse like a house of cards.

12:52 hrs IST: Joe Root and Moeen Ali are trying to steady the ship. The pressure is on both batsmen as India are on the attack.

12:43 hrs IST: The plan for India will be to bowl short at Moeen Ali. A lot of times in the series, he has gotten out to the short ball while playing the hook shot.

12:38 hrs IST: WICKET! The match has come alive. Jadeja strikes again and there is a sense of panic now in the England dressing room.

Flatter delivery on the stumps, Jennings dances down the track but Jadeja has shortened the length, the batsman can only chip it back to the bowler.

Keaton Jennings c and b Jadeja 54, England 110/2.

Keaton Jennings notched up his first fifty, having scored a century on debut in Mumbai. (BCCI)

12:35 hrs IST: Jennings flicks a full ball on the pads from Umesh Yadav to deep square leg and notches up his first fifty. He has followed up his debut century in Mumbai with a gritty fifty in Chennai.

12:30 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav replaces Ravichandran Ashwin at the other end. Is Kohli aiming for a wicket with reverse swing?

12:21 hrs IST: WICKET! What a way to go! Jadeja has made Cook his bunny and he gets him again.

Flatter delivery and spinning down the leg side, Cook attempts the leg glance but hits it straight to the fielder at leg slip. India finally have the breakthrough.

Alastair Cook c Rahul b Jadeja 49, England 103/1

12:14 hrs IST: We are back for the second session and there is an LBW appeal against Cook by Ravindra Jadeja. India opt for the review. Replays show it is missing leg stump. India lose a review.

12:02 hrs IST: The second session is about to begin. Meanwhile, there has been a shocking development regarding Michael Schumacher, the most successful F-1 champion. Read here to find out

11:42 hrs IST: Karun Nair’s triple century has been the major talking point in India. Sunil Gavaskar and Sourav Ganguly have their say on this historic feat.

Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings neared fifties as England survived the first session against India in Chennai. (BCCI)

11:34 hrs IST: That will be lunch on day 5 and England have played out the session really well. Both Cook and Jennings are nearing a fifty and India will be desperate to take a couple of wickets in the next session.

11:29 hrs IST: In the air and just past Pujara at silly point! Ashwin pushes this quicker delivery through on leg stump and Cook looks to work it to the leg side, the leading edge flies past Pujara. Tough chance.

11:27 hrs IST: Indian fans need not be too perturbed that a wicket has not fallen yet! In the Mirpur Test against Bangladesh in October, England finished the tea session without losing a single wicket. In the final session, they lost all 10 wickets to hand Bangladesh their historic first win against them. So, just a couple of wickets needed and the floodgates could open.

11:23 hrs IST: Cook and Jennings’ partnership is nearing 100. If England play out the next session in a similar way, then they will have gone a long way in saving this Test.

11:18 hrs IST: Poor fielding from Mishra. Cook punches a shortish delivery to the left of the bowler but he does not bend down in time. Mishraji is not a happy camper.

11:16 hrs IST: Parthiv Patel continues to have a tough time behind the wickets. Amit Mishra fires a wild throw from mid wicket and it bounces awkwardly in front of Parthiv, the ball goes past him for extra runs. England 87/0.

11:14 hrs IST: Jennings is growing in confidence as he regularly finds the boundary. India are struggling for the breakthrough.

Keaton Jennings played a couple of reverse sweeps as he shared a wonderful partnership with Alastair Cook. (BCCI)

11:08 hrs IST: Jadeja gets some extra bounce and spin as Cook works it past leg slip for a single.

11:05 hrs IST: Parthiv concedes a couple of byes. Next ball, Cook again uses the slog sweep and finds the deep mid wicket fence. England have moved to 71/0.

11:04 hrs IST: Mishra is exploiting the rough outside off well. Jennings and Cook survive a few close chances.

10:57 hrs IST: Amit Mishra is into the attack now. Can he get some purchase? England will mostly be facing trial by spin throughout the fifth day.

10:56 hrs IST: Cook has been trying the sweep shot throughout the morning and he finally connects as he finds the fine leg fence.

Ravindra Jadeja appealed for an LBW against Alastair Cook but the England captain continued to fight. (BCCI)

10:52 hrs IST: Good batting from Jennings. Ashwin gets this flighted delivery to dip but he unfurls the reverse sweep again and finds the third man boundary. Next ball, he hangs back and punches this flatter delivery to cover. England 57/0.

10:50 hrs IST: There was one patch on the bowler’s popping crease which had the England players worried on day 4. This is the solution that the groundsman came up with.

10:47 hrs IST: Jennings is growing in confidence as he unfurls the reverse sweep. He did that a bit in the Mumbai Test when he got a century on debut. In the next over bowled by Ravindra Jadeja, Cook survives an LBW shout

10:43 hrs IST: England bring up the team fifty. It has been a great effort from Cook and Jennings. Things not working out as planned for Kohli.

10:34 hrs IST: Not good bowling from Umesh Yadav! He bowls short and this time Keaton Jennings slams the pull to the deep mid wicket fence. England 45/0 and have survived the first hour well.

10:31 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav errs in his length and Cook hammers the pull shot to the deep mid wicket fence.

10:27 hrs IST: Edged but safe! Nothing going right for Ashwin. Tossed up on delivery on leg stump and it spins away sharply, Cook plays it with soft hands and the edge just falls in front of Murali Vijay at slip and goes past him. Ashwin having a frustrating day 5 so far.

10:21 hrs IST: Ashwin is maintaining tight lines but the England batsmen are judging his length and spin well. If the visitors do not lose wickets in a heap, then they can actually save this match.

England started well as India searched for quick wickets on the final day of the Chennai Test. (BCCI)

10:15 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav is into the attack and he immediately hurries up Alastair Cook with some extra pace. However, he slips on his follow-through. He is alright. England are bringing out their gritty character on day 5.

10:11 hrs IST: Slip, short leg and silly point in place. Kohli has been surprisingly reticent with his captaincy on day 5.

Parthiv Patel dropped a catch early on day 5. Alastair Cook was the batsman and Ravichandran Ashwin the bowler. (BCCI)

10:04 hrs IST: Cook and Jennings are comfortably playing out Ashwin and Ishant. There seems to be nothing in the pitch as of now.

09:58 hrs IST: Jennings has started well as he smashes Ashwin for his second boundary. Steady start by England as they make progress.

09:54 hrs IST: Beauty from Ashwin. The ball grips and spins away late, Cook looks to get behind the line and is beaten all ends up.

09:51 hrs IST: Ishant Sharma is getting some extra bounce on this deck. Keaton Jennings stands tall and looks to fend the delivery down, the ball hits the bat high on the splice.

Alastair Cook got going with a boundary on day 5 of the Chennai Test versus India. (BCCI)

09:46 hrs IST: SHOT! This will ease Cook’s nerves a bit. Fuller ball from Ishant Sharma and the England skipper creams the cover drive past extra cover for the first boundary of the day.

09:42 hrs IST: DROPPED! First chance of the day is put down. The series will be remembered as the series off dropped catches. Ashwin bowls this delivery with a bit more loop, it spins away late as Cook pokes at it, however, Parthiv Patel cannot take it.

09:35 hrs IST: Ishant Sharma starts off from the other end and he gets some lifting bounce. Cook rides the bounce well and he guides it down to third man.

09:33 hrs IST: Ashwin completes an over very quickly. Some drift on offer, some turn but still the pitch is playing well.

09:30 hrs IST: Out come Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings. Tall task on hand for them. The problem for England in their Asian sojourn has been they have lost wickets in heaps

09:25 hrs IST: Karun Nair, whose historic triple century on day 4 decimated England, said the pitch was getting difficult to bat on as the game progressed. Music to the ears of the Indian spinners.

09:20 hrs IST: A warm welcome to the final day of the fifth Test between India and England in Chennai. Will Virat Kohli’s team make it 4-0 or will England fight it out? On a wearing pitch, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will be the key.

To bat an entire day on a Chepauk wicket that is still trustworthy should not be a worry for Alastair Cook’s team but cricket is all about miracles. An English collapse cannot be totally ruled out.

After conceding a 282-run first-innings lead, England finished on 12 for no loss, needing to bat out the final day to save the match and prevent a 4-0 series loss. Cook was unbeaten on three at the close with Keaton Jennings on nine after a difficult day in the field for the touring side.

On Monday, Karun Nair made an epic unbeaten triple century to power India to their highest ever innings total against a demoralised England.

Nair became the second Indian batsman to score a test triple hundred and his 303 not out helped the hosts post a massive 759 for seven before skipper Virat Kohli declared.
