08:40 hrs IST: A warm welcome to one and all for the mega IPL auction. 10 years ago, the IPL had its first huge auction. Now, 578 players, international and India, will go under the hammer.

This year’s auction will feature 578 players in all with 361 from India. The top 16 players have been awarded marquee status with a base price of Rs 2 crore each. Notable among them are Stokes, Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan, Mitchell Starc, Chris Gayle, and Dwayne Bravo.

Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals have maximum fund left after player retention – Rs 67.50 crore each. Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Dardevils and Mumbai Indians have the minimum – Rs 47 crore each.

Stokes in focus

After his record breaking Rs 14.5 crore bid in 2017, world’s premier all-rounder Stokes is once again likely to force the franchises into loosening their purse strings.

This edition of the IPL auction will see many top Indian stars up for grabs. Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane will be two names that might garner maximum interest.

Wrist-spinners like Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal will also be high in demand. Ditto for players like KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, and Dinesh Karthik, who have had success in T20 format.

Since quality wrist spinners are the need of the hour in T20, Afghan sensation Rashid Khan Arman is again likely to laugh his way to the bank.

While MS Dhoni recently said that Chennai Super Kings will bid for their local man but with no Right To Match (RTM) available for Ashwin, it will be interesting to note how far the two-time champions go for him.

Along with the current India stars, veterans like Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh also might spring a surprise as there is no doubting their class.
