IPL 2019, DC vs CSK Highlights: Bravo hits the winning runs, CSK win by six wickets

Hindustan Times, New Delhi | By

Highlights: Shane Watson and Suresh Raina made batting look easy on a lifeless track as Chennai Super Kings coasted to a six-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals in an Indian Premier League encounter in New Delhi on Tuesday. Shikhar Dhawan’s painstaking half-century was the only silver lining in Delhi Capitals’ sub-par total of 147 for six which the defending champions overtook with two balls to spare. The scoreline might suggest that it was a close game but CSK were always in control of the chase despite a lot of balls being wasted by Mahendra Singh Dhoni at the back end of the innings. (Full scorecard) DC vs CSK, Highlights:

Bravo finishes the match with a boundary

Finally! MS Dhoni finds a boundary. Paul gives him a bit of width and the CSK skipper cuts it away to the fence. CSK need 11 more runs from 12 balls.

23:19 hrs IST

Dhoni struggles against Axar

MS Dhoni is carrying out his trademark plan of taking the game right till the end. However in the 17th over against Axar, Dhoni wanted to get off the blocks, but just managed a single off the last delivery. CSK need 22 from 18 balls.

23:15 hrs IST

22:49 hrs IST

Amith Mishra has the last laugh in this contest. After being hit for two sixes, Mishra lures Watson outside of his crease with a wide delivery and Rishabh Pant takes off the bails in a flash. CSK need 75 from 80 balls.

22:27 hrs IST

Watson hits Mishra for a six

Watson comes down the wicket and sends Mishra over his head for a six. And then a delivery later, he pulls the ball for another six! Chennai are well and truly on their way to achieve their target. CSK: 72/1

22:20 hrs IST

Raina slams Ishant for three boundaries

Suresh Raina clearly struggles with short balls and he’s expecting one every delivery. Ishant Sharma served three of them and he was sent to the boundary on all three occasions. Chennai: 51/1 in 5 overs.

22:14 hrs IST

Watson flicks Rabada for a boundary

After Rabada had Watson under pressure with four dot balls, he delivers a gift on the Australian’s pads. Watson says thank you very much and flicks it down the fine-leg boundary. CSK: 33/1 after 4 overs.

21:42 hrs IST

That should be that

Dwayne Bravo finally joined the party and his spell was brilliant in the end as CSK controlled things perfectly in the final 5 overs. DC could only manage 27 runs in the last leg of their innings, but this is a slow pitch and even Shikhar Dhawan, who scored a 50, never looked comfortable. Delhi have the attack to defend this total of 147 and they need to pick early wickets to puncture the chase up front

21:30 hrs IST

DC collapse

Slowish ball, Dhawan looks to swat it away, gets the top edge and Shardul Thakur runs around and takes a smart catch. Delhi are slipping away here

21:24 hrs IST

Paul is castled

Length ball, on the money from Jadeja, Paul goes back and then tries to do something with it, the ball is fast and is through him before he can get his bat down in time. Off stump is knocked back, CSK in command at the moment

21:20 hrs IST

Bravo strikes again!

Another length ball on middle stump, Ingram stays leg-side and goes for a drive, but ends up hitting it straight into the lap of the cover fielder. CSK are back on track here

21:16 hrs IST

Pant departs

He was beginning to take control of this innings, but he has flicked on in the air and the man at deep square leg runs around, slides and takes the catch cleanly. Good neat catch brings to an end this promising innings by Rishabh Pant

20:55 hrs IST

Iyer out

Flat and that was a googly on off stump, Iyer did not pick it, he went back to cut it, but the sharp turn defeats his attempt, and the ball crashes onto his pads, umpire Menon says, off you go Iyer, and Tahir celebrates with arms aloft

20:49 hrs IST

Tahir into the attack

The leg-spinner was greeted with a 6 by the Delhi captain, but he kept things under control after that stroke. Delhi need to press on, but this pitch is offering a lot of turn

20:42 hrs IST

Timeout

CSk in control of things as the umpire has signalled at this clock. Players will discuss tactics now, DC need to identify a good score and then pace the rest of the innings accordingly

20:37 hrs IST

Another tight over

DC are not able to breakfree here, CSK are controlling things rather well. Dhawan and Iyer want to accelerate but are not able to find any timing or momentum on this surface. Also, Dhoni has been rather smart with his bowling changes so far

20:29 hrs IST

Tight over from Bhajji

These are perfect conditions for the offie and he has not let this opportunity slip by, bowls a very tight over, concedes only a boundary, CSK have controlled things after the expensive first couple of overs

20:23 hrs IST

Shaw departs

Sluggish pitch, Chahar bangs one ball in, Shaw still wants to pull it away, gets no timing at the ball loops up to Shane Watson at short mid-wicket. CSK strike, Shaw got going, but now has to depart

20:15 hrs IST

Sluggish pitch

Well, this is a new ball and the bowlers are not slow either, but the ball is going to the keeper on one bounce, the lack of pace on this pitch is very evident and it will only get slower as the match progresses

20:06 hrs IST

Shaw gets going

Short ball on a slow pitch is not what you would want ideally, and Chahar does that exactly. Shaw sits back and swats it away for the first boundary. 7 runs from the first over and the Capitals have got going

19:58 hrs IST

Teams walk out

Out walk the umpires, followed by the yellow brigade, and now out walk Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan. There is a buzz at the Kotla, this one can be a rather interesting

19:45 hrs IST

Teams

Chennai Super Kings (Playing XI): Shane Watson, Ambati Rayudu, Suresh Raina, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni(w/c), Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir

Delhi Capitals (Playing XI): Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer(c), Colin Ingram, Rishabh Pant(w), Keemo Paul, Axar Patel, Rahul Tewatia, Amit Mishra, Kagiso Rabada, Ishant Sharma

19:40 hrs IST

Toss update

Iyer: Everything is new at the moment. The fans are coming and cheering for us. The positive vibe is contagious in the team. We will have a bat first. We are looking for 170-180, it plays (the wicket) slow in the second innings. It’s a good toss to win. We have made one change. Amit Mishra comes in place of Trent Boult

Dhoni: Chennai was completely different, this would be slightly different. I think it would be a good wicket. I think all the venues are great in India. We have played a lot of games here but all the venues are pretty special. We were looking to bowl first, we don’t exactly know how the wicket behaves. It looks a bit tacky. We are playing the same team.

19:15 hrs IST

Pitch report

“Devoid of grass,” says Sanjay Manjrekar for Star Sports’ pitch report. “it also feels very hard as I walk along side it and that is very good [for strokeplay]” He then shows that batsmen will have to make a major adjustment - balls pitching short here won’t bounce as high as say at Wankhede.

19:11 hrs IST

Rohan - Now take a look at Delhi Capitals

With the Capitals taking on Chennai Super Kings at home on Tuesday, it seems unlikely that they will be tweaking their winning combination. The pitch at Feroz Shah Kotla is historically spin-friendly and a lot of responsibility will be there on the shoulders of Rahul Tewatia and Axar Patel.

Read more about the prediction here.

19:09 hrs IST

Manish - We have CSK’s predicted XI

However, the pitch at the Feroz Shah Kotla will be quite dry and as a result, they may retain all of their pace options and as a result, Faf will have to wait a bit longer to make his presence felt in this year’s IPL.

Read more about the prediction here.

18:46 hrs IST

Rohan - We have Pant, you just don’t understand

It’s all past, it all happened with the Daredevils, we are now the Capital and we have Rishabh Pant, inspired to down any challenge.

Case in point is his record against the CSK spinners in Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja. His strike rate against the left-arm spin of Jadeja is 155 and has been dismissed only once against him.

18:42 hrs IST

Manish - Delhi are vulnerable at home

Delhi haven’t fared very well on their home ground; in their avatar as Delhi Daredevils, they had a 27-35 win-loss record at the Feroze Shah Kotla ground.

CSK on the other hand are one of the more successful teams at the Feroz Shah Kotla winning 4 out of their 6 matches here.

And they are against the defending champions, so, we know how this is going to end, don’t we?

18:38 hrs IST

Manish with the riposte - Harbhajan Singh in the groove

Harbhajan Singh returned with figures of 3/20 in the opening match of IPL 2019. If we look at most wickets’ vs Delhi Capitals, we see Harbhajan at the top with 21 wickets alongside Lasith Malinga. And he loves bowling at left-handers and Dhoni could well use him against Dhawan in the powerplay overs

18:36 hrs IST

Rohan fires the opening salvo

Well, Shikhar Dhawan returns home and his numbers at Kotla are mighty impressive.

Shikhar Dhawan who started his IPL career with Delhi in 2008 is all set to return his first home game at Kotla after 11 years. At Kotla he has played 14 innings and scored 483 runs which is the second best in terms of runs scored in IPL. His strike rate at Kotla is 131.25 which is the best among the top 5 venues.

18:25 hrs IST

Hello and welcome

Both sides have won their first match, both sides have ticked many boxes and both sides look balanced. It is the defending champions, CSK who will take on Delhi Capitals at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. MS Dhoni will be up against Rishabh Pant, in one of the many subplots in the contest.

My name is Manish Pathak, cricket correspondent at Hindustan Times and I will try to present the case as to why I think CSK will go onto win this match in Delhi. My fellow cricket correspondent Rohan Pathak will put be vocal for the Delhi Capitals. This could get intense!
