Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday retained their captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ruturaj Gaikwad among their Indian contingent, with Moeen Ali being the sole overseas retention for the 2022 Indian Premier League. There were many notable absentees in the four-player list - the major being South Africa's Faf du Plessis.

The opener was Chennai Super Kings' second-highest run-scorer in the 2021 season of the tournament (633 runs in 16 matches) and played a key role in their title-winning season. He was also the highest run-getter for the CSK in the 2020 edition (449 runs in 13 matches). Many had pipped du Plessis to be retained by the Super Kings but Moeen Ali's all-round abilities might have been the decisive factor behind his retention ahead of the mega auction.

However, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has not entirely ruled out bringing back the decorated former South African captain to Chennai.

"We look forward to getting them back. For example, Faf has been a team man who has taken us to the finals of two important seasons. It will be our endeavor to go and try for him. But it's not in our hands," Viswanathan said in a video posted by the Chennai Super Kings.

"We wish them all the very best wherever they are. We look forward to having a very good 2022."

Viswanathan also hinted at the possibility of having a full-capacity MA Chidambaram Stadium in the 2022 edition. "Chennai has been a very lucky ground for us, we had a good home advantage. That is because of the support we get from the CSK fans who throng to the stadium. I hope that this year, we get the entire MA Chidambaram Stadium for our use," said the CSK CEO.

Ravindra Jadeja was the first name in the retention list released by CSK, followed by captain MS Dhoni. Viswanathan said that Dhoni "controls the team," and has remained the mainstay for the Super Kings.

"Thala has been the mainstay of CSK. He has been a captain who has delivered for us. He gets the best out of the team every time he plays. As far as we are concerned, Thala plays a major role because he controls the team, and the team is benefitted by his experience. Nobody can doubt his skills as a captain," said Viswanathan.
