India vs Afghanistan Commentary
5:16 PM IST The Presentation ceremony...
5:14 PM IST Onto the next one - India have taken the early lead in this three-match ODI series, the first-ever between the two nations, but there are still a couple of games to go, and Afghanistan will look to bounce back quickly. The 2nd ODI will be played on Wednesday, 17 June, in Lucknow. That game will begin at 8 am GMT (1.30 pm IST), but as usual, you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up. For now, there's still plenty of cricketing action going on, and you can switch tabs to catch our coverage of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup as well, where West Indies Women are about to take on New Zealand Women in the third and final game of the day. Cheers!
5:14 PM IST Let's hear from Afghanistan's captain - Hashmatullah Shahidi admits it was a tough game for them. He feels losing back-to-back wickets proved decisive. Shahidi reckons a total in the region of 220-230 would have been a good score. Opines they fell 30 runs short with the bat. Shahidi shares that he tried to target the left-arm spinner, particularly with the shorter boundary on the leg side, but it did not come off for him. He takes responsibility for the batting collapse as well, admitting that the slide began with his dismissal. Hashmatullah also feels the wicket was on the flatter side and believes they were not disciplined enough with the ball. Hopes to come back stronger in the next game.
5:13 PM IST Player of the Match - The skipper of India, Shubman Gill, gets the award for a match-winning knock of 84 unbeaten runs, along with a stunning catch. Gill starts by saying that they did well to pull things back after Rahmanullah Gurbaz started to hit those shots. Adds that the wicket was brilliant to bat on, but there was a bit of grip for the Indian spinners and not enough of a grip when Afghanistan bowled. On his catch, he says that this was the first time that he's taken such a brilliant catch in international cricket. On the debutants, Gill applauds the way Gurnoor Brar bowled and even the way Harsh Dubey came back after conceding plenty of runs in his first over. Gill adds that the middle overs in ODIs are very crucial, and if you can rotate strike well and not lose too many wickets in that phase, you can set up the game nicely.
4:54 PM IST Right then, there's a drone show for the crowd to enjoy after the game, so stay tuned for the presentation ceremony.
4:54 PM IST What happened earlier? Right from the off, we were in for a delay, which turned out to be a really long one, as the irritating drizzle simply wouldn't let up. Finally, when the skies cleared, it stayed that way, and Afghanistan were asked to bat first by Shubman Gill. Rahmanullah Gurbaz led the fightback for the visitors after the Indian pacers reduced them to 26/3 inside the first 5 overs. Gurbaz went on to score a blistering ton, the fastest by an Afghan batter in ODIs, but apart from him, there wasn't much contribution from the others. As for India, the two debutants - Harsh Dubey and Gurnoor Brar, both picked up three wickets each, and they managed to keep Afghanistan to under the 200-run mark.
