Sachin Tendulkar

Age 53IndiaINDIA
Right Handed Batsman

Long before statistics captured his unparalleled longevity, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar functioned as the living canvas upon which modern batting perfection was painted. Born on April 24, 1973, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, the prodigy carried the quiet expectation of an entire nation from the moment he made his international debut as a sixteen-year-old against Pakistan at Karachi in November 1989.

His orthodox technical foundation relied on an impeccably still head position, precise footwork, and a compact backlift that rendered him virtually untouchable across every bowling condition. Over a monumental 200 Test matches, he amassed 15,921 runs at an average of 53.78 with 51 centuries, setting an unmatched standard for red-ball durability and classical mechanics.

His mastery extended far beyond orthodox defense, revolutionizing top-order white-ball batting after promoting himself to open against New Zealand at Auckland in March 1994. In One-Day Internationals, he accumulated 18,426 runs across 463 matches at an average of 44.83 with 49 centuries, including the historic first double-century in men's ODI history against South Africa at Gwalior in February 2010. The crown jewel of his international career arrived during the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup at home, where he finished as India's leading run-scorer to secure the coveted trophy.

Along with his monumental accomplishments with the bat, Tendulkar operated as a remarkably versatile and effective bowling weapon who earned the enduring moniker of India's "Golden Arm." Capable of seamlessly switching between medium-pace seamers, sharp leg-break variations, and flighted off-spin, his bowling produced iconic match-winning moments that broke crucial opposition partnerships under intense pressure. He famously bowled a successful final over against South Africa during the 1993 Hero Cup semi-final at Eden Gardens, and later delivered a decisive three-wicket spell on the final day of the historic 2001 Kolkata Test against Australia. Across his international career, he collected 201 total wickets, including 154 ODI scalps with two five-wicket hauls at Kochi, both against Australia, proving himself to be an invaluable multi-dimensional match-winner.

Beyond his staggering global totals of 34,357 international runs and 100 international centuries, Tendulkar stood as a unifying cultural pillar who carried the emotional heartbeat of a nation for nearly a quarter of a century. His unprecedented contributions earned him India's highest sporting and national distinctions, including the Arjuna Award in 1994, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 1997, the Padma Shri in 1999, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. In 2014, he became the first sportsperson and the youngest recipient ever conferred with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, before his induction into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2019. Retiring from all international cricket in November 2013, his enduring legacy remained the ultimate gold standard of technical brilliance, mental fortitude, and sporting immortality.
